Opening a Checking Account
To apply for a checking account at one of our walk-in branches, please bring:
- Valid driver’s license or state-issued ID
- Proof of current address (if the address on your ID is not accurate, please bring in a pay stub or utility bill)
- Social Security number
- At least $100 minimum opening balance to deposit into a checking account
If you desire a joint account, we’ll need a valid ID and required documentation for each applicant.
Power Checking Account
Easy to maintain with no minimum balance requirements and no monthly fee.

Rewards Checking Account
Designed to reward the BankIowa customer with multiple accounts.
- Interest bearing checking account
- $100 minimum opening balance
- Maintain a $3,500 average daily collected balance or a $10,000 aggregate balance to avoid a $15 monthly maintenance fee. The aggregate balance is defined as the sum of the average daily collected balance of your deposit accounts and the current principal balance of your consumer loans on the last day of the statement cycle. First mortgage, credit cards, and business loans are excluded from the calculation.

Debit Cards
A Visa® debit card is Included with our Rewards and Champion checking accounts. It has no annual fee and can be used at eligible ATMs to make deposits or withdrawals, check funds availability, or transfer funds. If you make a transaction at one of the thousands of available Shazam ATMs, the transaction is free. It is accepted like a credit card can be used at online or in-store retailers as electronic payment rather than wiring a check.
Direct Deposit
For convenience and easy access, have your paycheck deposited into your BankIowa account(s) automatically. Direct Deposit offers many conveniences, including:
- Instant Access – electronic payroll deposit shows up in your account earlier than depositing in person providing instant access to funds
- Alerts – enroll in online or mobile banking to set up alerts to receive a message to your cell phone or e-mail to let you know when your direct deposit funds post
- Security – reduces theft or loss of a printed check
To set up direct deposit, ask your employer for the company’s payroll direct deposit form. You will need our routing number and the account number where you intend to deposit your check. If you are on Social Security and want to set up direct deposit, please visit www.godirect.org. This is a secure government site to help you get set up correctly.

Check Stop Payment
If you need to stop payment on a check before it posts, call us during normal business hours at (800) 433-0285 or stop by one of our walk-in branches for assistance. There is a $30 fee per check for check stop payment.
